Description

One day workshop held at the University of Cambridge, designed to identify UK industrial data measurement requirements and promote the establishment of the new NPL data research initiative.

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is establishing a data research initiative dedicated to supporting industry in the rapidly accelerating reliance on data and the digital economy. Under its remit as the UK's National Measurement Institute (NMI), NPL will create the measurement framework required for traceability in big data systems. Through the provision of data standards and verified data processing methodologies enabling unbroken chains of data flow with quantifiable uncertainties at each step, the value of data is increased and the legal standing of decisions made on big data analytics is ensured.

The objectives for the workshop are to identify UK data measurement requirements through a set of industry problems statements, and for companies to express their interest in working with NPL in areas including:

  • Reliable methods for combining data of different types/structure from different platforms
  • Propagation of uncertainty through data processing algorithms and data curation methods
  • Uncertainty estimates on decision making methods
  • Quantification of non-standard datasets such as video and/or social media streams
  • Measurement and annotation of data quality and the need to flex data quality in real time
  • Standards for metadata for interoperability, management and storage of data
  • Standards and safety protocols for the next generation of AI and machine-written software
  • How to address the data science skills gap in the UK
